Jacob - 7 months 1 week old today. He is sitting just next to me, in his colourful and 'noisy' walker. Anthing he touches on the walker music tray gives out noises like a drum beat, boink boink or music to the the tune of Yankee Doodle, Oh Mc Donald and Twinkle Twinkle Little Stars. Having this walker is a blessing; it gives me some time on my own to do my stuff while he goes about doing his.
Ever since acquiring the ability to grab things, Jacob loves to stretch out his arms so he can reach for things. For instance, when I'm holding a mug close to my mouth, he would try to grab the mug from me and pull it towards his mouth. With the walker, he is more mobile and would use his legs to push himself forward to reach for anything within reach. A couple of nights back, hubby demonstrated how Jacob pushes himself forward with outstretched arms to grab a packet of Japanese crackers from his hands. We were delighted.
As I'm typing away, he is trying to reach for a tv cable wire and exploring his surroundings. Prior to the walker, I would always place him on a thin mattress next to me while I do my work and he would roll himself from side to side, sometimes hitting his heavy head on the timber parquet flooring. As he becomes more and more agile in turning and rolling, the bed too has become a hazard to his safety.
The walker helps to keep him busy for a while and I thing he loves it too. Who wouldn't? I must admit that I'm one who is against using baby walker for several reasons. When I was in Amsterdam six years ago, a friend told me that a research in the UK showed that baby walkers is not good for baby's development as baby tends to tip toe. However, this Chicco DJ baby walker is adjustable to three levels and you can adjust it in such a way your baby don't have to tip toe walking. Jacob isn't so I'm confortable with that.
